“Retirement Favourites of Kathleen Peddicord”

with No Comments

The article praising PANAMA as a whole was written/inspired by Katherine Peddicord who, with her husband Leaf, is profiting from her properties, seminars & immigration services there in Panama. Thus, you would expect her to accentuate the positive & not elaborate on the negatives. We liked Panama but it gets nowhere near as good a score in my book as say some of our choices in the French Riviera, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia or Switzerland. In Panama, you’ll find (outside of selected upscale communities) Garbage strewn all over the place. Garbage is uncollected — as in Naples.… Read More

We were driving across the border around 2PM yesterday, leaving Switzerland at Chiasso to enter Como. It was not rush hour — yet there was a back up of hundreds of cars waiting to cross the border into Italy. Most had Italian plates. All were being stopped, questioned, and usually searched. There were dozens of uniformed Italians from the “Guardia de Finanza” and also many cops from the Swiss Dogana –seemingly working together.… Read More

TOXIC AMERICANS part two — ACCIDENTAL AMERICANS CAUGHT IN IRS NET

One of the advantages of me, Grandpa, being an old geezer who has been dealing with Swiss banks for 50 years, is that young kids I started dealing with ages ago, are now big shots. So I assured my friend I could probably get in touch with a long time personal friend (a senior officer at his bank) and iron out his problems. I had not heard the expression “Toxic Americans” yet.… Read More

Up until recently, it was unthinkable that the USA or any country could pass laws and regulations that would be binding on companies or banks located abroad –especially if those banks had no offices nor places of business inside the USA. But after their success in collecting nearly a billion dollars in fines from the giant Swiss Bank UBS, the USA decided it could take on all the banks of the world with the dreaded new law—- FATCA.… Read More

FATCA, DODD FRANK & RECENT HISTORY

Thirty years ago, long before Bye Bye Big Brother was written, there were about 5 million Americans living abroad. Official figures lie, and indicate about the same number as of now. However, the reality is closer to 14 million. Under the existing laws, all Americans living abroad (with a few exceptions) were and still are required to file informational income tax returns, even if they owe no tax. Most of the Americans living abroad did not in fact owe tax because there was a generous exemption. Today this exemption is around $95,000 of earned income. Back then in inflation adjusted dollars, it was even more in terms of purchasing power.… Read More

They want the public to believe they can read “scandalous secret revelations.” But like the old “True Confessions” magazine, the headlines are attention getting. Inside, the story is usually just gossip— “much ado about nothing.” In the present case, the headlines promised vast lists of Americans with secret accounts. But none were named aside from a few who had earlier confessed to unrelated crimes and were currently serving time.… Read More

A 2nd Passport was a good idea at the time–1970 to 2000. Precious Metals? As a practical matter, when you buy gold coins you pay a 3-5% premium and when you sell you do so at a 3-5% discount. It is not so easy to “make money” when you need the product to go up 6-10% just to break even. Is this the top of the market? I don’t know, but when prices are at all time highs, it is not generally the best time to buy.… Read More

Panama’s National Assembly recently passed “Resolution 52.” The intent of the resolution was supposedly to ensure that the government will collect taxes on transient rental income…Except that’s not what the law said. What Resolution 52 actually did is make it illegal for anyone to rent his/her property for a period of less than one year. The justification was that if you don´t let transients compete for housing, there will be more apartments for the masses. … Read More
